Thanks!How well do front or mid tine tillers break up large clods of clay?Hello, if you read any of my other answers you will find i work for a plant hire firm, a mid tyned tiller is just that a tiller, i usually put these out to customer who have already dug over there plot of land and just want to turn it over quickly, IE, allotments, flower beds, although they are robust and very good at there job they are not capable of the heavy job.
The rear tyned ones are called cultivators, these normally have powered wheels in the middle, are very capable of ripping up a lawn or any thing in its way, if you are just turning the soil over then stick to the tiller but if you are doing a bit landscaping work then a cultivator is more your machine.
As for makes we run Cammon tillers and cultivators (model C8 %26amp;C10) from a company called Tracmaster,(www.tracmaster.co.uk) the machine its self is Italian but we have no problems and they are in and out continuusley, Husquavarner (i think thats how you spell it) make one but it isnt very good, as long as you get one with a Honda engine on it you are half way there. Dry clay is usually easier to till, it may take some effort to break it up, but at least you're not dealing with clogged tines that tend to %26quot;rub%26quot; their way through the areas you're trying to till.
Not sure what models are best, but the more horsepower, the better.
