Our house front door handle just spins. Removed the handle to find the locating mechanism inside broken up (the square hole that a brass rod fits through to operate the door lock).
If the door was open this would be a doddle, but it isn't what do i do?

Any ideas how to open it?hi, the only thing you can do, if you look at the gap in the door can you see the lock going into the frame, if you can you may be able to drill a line of small holes in the lock bar and then use a screw driver and hammer to break it off, if this fails are there pins in the hinges you can remove, sorry i cant be of more help...Front door mechanism broken up, while door closed. When my door lock broke the only thing we could do was for my boyfriend to shoulder the door really hard until the frame broke enough to force the door open, then we could repair the lock when the door was open.
